Report: San Francisco 49ers ‘Planning’ For Major Quarterback ‘Problem’ In 2025 Offseason
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are “planning” for a big “problem” at the quarterback position coming their way soon. The 49ers have gotten a bargain with Brock Purdy the previous two years.

Purdy, the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, signed a four-year deal worth $3.7 million. His near MVP-level of play last season, mixed with a cheap contract, allowed the 49ers to spend heavily at other positions and nearly win a Super Bowl. But the coach that is Purdy’s contract is about to turn into a pumpkin next year when the quarterback is eligible for a new contract.

The San Francisco 49ers are planning for the 2025 offseason

According to Cam Inman with Mercury News, 49ers CEO Jed York discussed Purdy’s future with the team. He said the front office is planning how to go about extending Purdy:

“There’s a lot of planning that goes into it. I’m glad we have Paraag (Marathe), J.L. (John Lynch), Kyle (Shanahan). They’re the ones that are going to figure out the details of it, and I just have to sign the check. My part in that is kind of easy.”

Brock Purdy’s contract: A “good problem”

Those checks will have a lot of zeros attached. York said Purdy will ask for a contract no other quarterback has asked for, and he knows it will be for more than $40 million a year annually. York called the situation a “good problem” for the 49ers because it means they have a good franchise quarterback:

“It’s a good problem when you’re quarterback is one of the highest-paid guys on your team and in the league,” York told Bay Area reporters Tuesday at the NFL’s annual owners meetings in Orlando, Fla.

Can the 49ers keep their core?

However, Purdy’s contract will be a problem for the 49ers once he signs the extension. The 49ers are paying players high salaries at premium and luxury positions, which has helped Purdy and the team reach two NFC Championship games in a row.

The 49ers want to keep wide receiver Brandon Aiyu k and Deebo Samuel on the same roster. The 49ers believe Aiyuk helps Purdy to be a better quarterback. But can they afford him, Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, Charvarius Ward, and Nick Bosa?

Per Over The Cap, the 49ers are set to start nearly $24 million in the red for the 2025 offseason. That’s before Purdy’s potential extension and without Aiyuk on the roster.

The 49ers will need Purdy to be the reason the team wins games when he signs that extension.
