Insider reveals why first-round trade-up won't be easy for Vikings

The Vikings seem to be gearing up for a trade-up in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft after acquiring their second first-round pick (No. 23) from the Texans earlier this offseason.

Now with pick Nos. 11 and 23, many believe Minnesota is equipped to make a jump into the top five to draft its next quarterback following Kirk Cousins' departure to the Falcons in free agency.

However, ESPN's Field Yates thinks that may be a little more difficult than most have predicted.

"While 11 and 23 for 4 or 5 does align on the draft value charts, those charts don't account for the competing offers that will drive up the price or the QB premium," Yates posted on platform X. "I really think the cost of a trade up would be 11, 23 and more valuable chips."

What the extra compensation is that it would take to move up is up for debate, but the Vikings don't have a ton of value outside of their first-round picks this year. Minnesota isn't scheduled to be on the clock again until pick No. 108 in the fourth round.

The team could use future draft capital to move up as well, but it remains to be seen if that would be able to top what other teams are offering.

The Broncos (No. 12) and Raiders (No. 13) are also in the market for their next franchise quarterbacks, which is why NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah thinks it will be one of the biggest storylines of the draft.

"Fascinated to see what happens with teams picking 11, 12 & 13. All three have QB need but top 3 QB's are going with first three picks," Jeremiah posted on platform X. "Do you love the 4th enough to go up or are you content to see if he falls to you? Do they have the same guy rated as 4th QB? Huge storyline."

The Vikings have certainly set themselves up to make a splash move, but their efforts could be deterred depending on what the asking price is.

Either way, there's good reason to believe there will be some big trades on Day 1 and Minnesota could end up being the first team to make a move.
