Michigan football makes progress with transfer portal DT

Jay’viar Suggs, a target of Michigan football from the transfer portal and one of the top players available, released a top six earlier this week.

Michigan football cracked his top six after his visit to Ann Arbor on Monday. Now, Suggs has posted another update about his recruitment, releasing a top four and saying that his recruitment is “closed.”

USC and Arkansas were the two teams eliminated. Michigan football is now in the running with Wisconsin, LSU, and Kentucky — three other teams that have been actively searching for D-line help.

LSU and Wisconsin were each in the mix for CJ West. Michigan was too, but West chose Indiana. Now, that puts the onus on Suggs. If Michigan misses here, there aren’t any other D-line targets on the board. That could change but at this point, it’s not likely. Nobody new is entering the portal so you’d have to offer a player you didn’t think was worth offering before.

If it was me, I’d stick with who I have. Rayshaun Benny is going to be a tremendous third option but then it will depend on young players getting ready to contribute.

Suggs would add valuable depth for the Wolverines

That’s why adding someone like Suggs would be ideal. He could be the fourth defensive lineman and play a lot of snaps next to Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant. Suggs will probably never face a double team and after notching 7.5 tackles for loss and five sacks for D-2 Grand Valley State, that has to be inviting.

Michigan has done a better job than the other programs on the list of developing and sending D-linemen to the pros, especially defensive tackles. If this comes down to fit, Michigan is a great choice. If it’s about NIL money, it will be LSU or Kentucky, even though Brian Kelly said the Tigers don’t pay for players.

The Bryce Underwood recruitment is the only example needed to know that’s not true. But the point remains the same. I like where Michigan stands unless this becomes a bidding war.
